Testing trailer lights without a vehicle.

Using a trailer light tester enables a single user to test trailer lights with ease or can be used as a caravan lights tester also. Lets face it, maintaining your trailer lights can be cumbersome at times. Always leaving you with open questions on where the faults are coming from, the most common problems you’ll come across are….

  • Brand new connection errors
  • Trailer plug age and condition
  • Car plug age and condition
  • Car circuit failure
  • Trailer circuit failure
  • Incorrect plug wiring
  • Trailer cable damage most commonly near the plug
  • Blown globes
  • Incorrect trailer wiring
  • Direct connections to earth (the trailers frame)
  • Poor trailer earthing

Our Trailer Light Testers can help you resolve the trailer wiring issues quickly without the hassle for requiring a vehicle as it acts in place of the absent vehicle. Simply plug and play.

What can you expect when plugging in a Trailer Light Tester?

Once the trailer is plugged into you trailers 7 pin trailer wiring tester you’ll simply have the option to inject a 12 volt power signal into all the trailers lighting circuits and monitor each load (amps) the lights are pulling also. the signals you’ll inject are….

  • Switch 1 – Yellow – Left-hand turn indicator.
  • Switch 2 – Red – Stop lights.
  • Switch 3 – Blue – Service brakes.
  • Switch 4 – Black – Reversing Lights
  • Switch 5 – Brown – Tail lights.
  • Switch 6 – Green – Right hand turn indicator

The trailer tester indicates each lights amps which just means the trailers lights are illuminating. If you’ve got amps on the units display it means the trailers lights are on. Equally you can walk around to the back of the trailer and physically check to confirm this.

If the units showing amps the trailers got lights.

  • To much amps means short circuits
  • To little amps means bad circuit connections.
  • No amps means no light is illuminating

Purchase a 230 volt Supplied unit or Battery Supplied unit?

230 volts AC down to 12 volts DC units are perfect for the garage, warehouse or wherever 230 volts are always available, it’ll negate the need for constant charging of the unit.

12 volt DC units are a portable trailer light tester supplied by a internal lead acid battery which can last years like a car battery and are easily replaceable. Mobile Trailer Light testers can be useful in the outdoors and yard areas where trailers don’t have access to constant 230 volt mains supply. Our battery supplied testers have been used on constant loads of all lights turned on for up to 5 hours straight before requiring a top up charge.

What about a Truck Trailer Light Tester?

Truck trailer loads are much larger than a regular car trailer often requiring 24v trailer light tester and up to 5 to 10 amps in drain capacity. Truck trailers come in both 12 volts and 24 volt wired systems and you’ll require a matching 12v – 24v Trailer Light Tester to accommodate.

How To Test Electric Trailer Brakes?

If you are after an electric brake tester that is good for testing electric trailer brakes we recommend either the 12 volt Vehicle & trailer light tester TLT9 or the Trailer Light Tester TLT9 Remote Controlled unit. Both these units house a larger 6amp hour battery and can handle a lot more current drain than the smaller units which protects the battery from a deep discharge during a test which can reduce a lead acid battery’s lifetime.

When applying a voltage to the electric brakes the test itself should take no more than a minute to carry out.

To test the trailers brakes for correct working condition jack the trailer up on one side so the wheel is freely spinning and apply a load to the trailers electric brakes with the trailer light tester and watch for the wheel to stop spinning. Go to the trailer wheel and safely apply some gentle braking force with your hands in a circular direction being mindful not cause the jack to tip over or cause any personal crush injury.

How To Test Trailer Brake Magnets?

Applying a trailer brake magnet test with the trailer light tester should also cause the magnets to activate, each electric brake should pull between 3 to 4amps depending on its age. For a combined 4 brake assembly a total of around 16 amps should be drawn while applying power to the electric brakes on the trailer.

Conclusion

So to wrap it up why use a trailer light tester over a car? Its because you can check the trailer circuits, caravan circuits and truck trailer circuits quick and easy at the touch of a switch. Priceless when fault finding, trailer wiring and preparing any trailer whether its a car, truck or camper trailer for its first or next use.
